Here are the basic things you need to know about getting a standard brake service.
How often should I get a brake service?
There’s no hard and fast rule about how often you should have your brakes serviced. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend that you check your brakes every 5,000 to 7,000 miles or every 4 to 6 months, whichever comes first. An easy way to make sure you check your brakes often enough is to ask your mechanic to take a look at them whenever you get your oil changed.
What does the technician check?
So what exactly does the technician do during a standard brake service? There are a few basic things that should always be part of the service:
- Flush old brake fluid
- Check the rotors and brake pads
- Adjust the calipers and braking mechanisms
If the technician finds anything that needs to be replaced or repaired, they will let you know. Depending on the parts required for your vehicle, they may be able to make the repair right away.
Do all the parts get replaced at once?
The components of your braking system don’t all wear out at the same rate. For example, brake pads usually start to wear out at about 30,000 miles, while rotors don’t start to show signs of wear until 50,000 miles. Calipers can make it to 75,000 miles, so it’s unlikely that you will need more than one part of your braking system to be replaced at a time.
